· Do not take your new puppy outside and play on the grass until he/she is fully vaccinated.
· Your puppy should be scheduled for their next vaccinations at 11 weeks of age.
· Do not allow your new puppy to go around animals that are not up to date on their vaccinations. In your “Go home bag” there is a washable pee pad to get started with potty training. You can purchase disposable pads or washable pads as needed for training.
· Once they are fully vaccinated, you can start potty training your puppy to go outside. Please note that Shih-tzus puppies can be very stubborn at times and can take up to six months to a year to learn to potty outside. Consistency is the key to success.
· Do not give your new puppy rawhide bones/sticks/ or anything of that nature. The puppy can swallow it and can get very sick and/or die.
· In your go home bag is a deer antler, please offer this to them when puppy wants to chew on things you do not want damaged. This is training. It is to show the puppy what they can and cannot chew on. The deer antlers have nutrients and cannot hurt your puppy as they do not break into pieces. Dispose of when they are small enough to swallow. If your have other dogs they may also enjoy the experience of chewing on deer antlers.
· Remember that NuVet Plus Canine supplement is crucial to your puppy in receiving the right nutrients and grow healthy. They have already been on this product since before birth and are familiar with the product and enjoy it.
· Your puppy will be eating dry kibble puppy food -- EVOLVE Brand. Always have fresh water and food available for your puppy. Puppies can have a drop in blood sugar levels and this can make them sick.
· You can change their food to a brand of your choice but make sure it is a good brand for puppies with high protein. Do this gradually by mixing the new food with the EVOLVE food in equal portions and slowly reducing the quantity of the old food. Changing food can make your puppy’s stomach upset and they can have diarrhea and then get dehydrated.
· You can give your puppy baths at least once a week. Please use baby wash that is gentle on their skin and coat. Completely dry them off, they can get too cold and get sick.
· Your puppy is microchipped. Please make sure you register your puppy with your name and number to the company of the microchip. If you change your phone number, make sure the company and your vet know your new phone number.
· Do not walk your puppy with a collar. Please use a harness instead because Shih Tzu have a short windpipe and can choke with a collar or it can damage their trachea.
· If you have any other questions about your new puppy that is not mentioned here please reach out to us at shihtzusofocala.com or call (352) 516-7905.
